How To get Rid of Frizzy Hair? That question has always been on my mind. A Bad Hair Day is my worst nightmare! As a mixed race woman with just below shoulder length hair, I understand the pain of frizz! For years I tied my hair back in plaits to ensure none of the tell tale fuzz would show, but this just meant that I could not use my hair the way all women use their hair, as an expression of self. I actually love my hair as it is a combination of afro and euro! On a good day,
I have big, glorious curls and cascading ringlets and waves. Having a good day everyday has been a battle though and I have trawled through some expensive products, some loaded with chemicals and others just not doing what it said on the tin! I’ve seen the commercials where models with long, flowing locks would run their fingers through their hair with not a knot or a tangle in sight. This was something I had never known! Were I to brush my hair, it would be instant frizz. So, with big and curly hair, I needed to know how to get rid of frizzy hair.
Basic Hair Care
Shampoo and conditioner. These two basic products don’t have to be expensive. We need them all the time so opt for a good quality bargain product, perhaps something with argon oil or olive oil in it. These will help keep hair soft and tangle free. One thing that works really well to soften and de-frizz hair is coconut oil. This takes a little time and preparation, and you will need a few hours of pampering yourself to do it!
Coconut oil comes in solid form. You can buy it very cheaply at any chemist or drug store, even on-line purchasing offers a great discount on larger sizes. Opt for the ‘pure’ coconut oil and try to get a big tub as you can use it for cooking also! Coconut oil is multi-talented. Once the oil comes into contact with body heat it begins to melt into the clear liquid form. An easy way to get the right amount in your hand is to simply place the tub into a pan of hot water, it doesn’t have to be boiling. The oil will start to melt. Scoop out a handful and start to massage into your dry hair. You can use as much as you like, it is a natural product and not harmful at all (if you have a nut allergy, then do check that you can be in contact with coconut oil, if not then you can use olive oil for the same effect). Once you have massaged all the oil into your hair, wrap a warmed towel around your head and sit back with a magazine and a cup of tea. Relax for a while. If you have a partner who doesn’t mind, then leave it in overnight; just make sure you use an old pillow case or put a towel over your pillow! The coconut oil softens your hair and the act of massage stimulates the follicles which encourages growth. Coconut oil is almost a miracle of nature as it has so many uses, but for hair the results are amazing. After a few weeks of using this treatment, your hair will feel thicker, fuller, softer and you will probably see visible growth and shine. You will also be able to get rid of frizz!
Lather, Rinse and Feel the Difference
Once you have left the oil in for a while, whether that’s a couple of hours or even overnight; jump in the shower and rinse your hair thoroughly. Shampoo and condition as normal. If you towel dry your hair rather than blow dry, you will notice that your hair is softer and ‘sits’ better on your head. It is less ‘fly-away’ and a lot of the frizz will be gone. I always find that my curls are more pronounced and I have a lot more movement in my hair. I also find myself touching my hair a lot more because it feels soft and lovely!
Long Term Luxury
There are several products on the market to get rid of frizzy hair, but for me coconut oil is the best as it works every time and it continues to work over time. Each time you treat your hair, it makes a change in the textures. Most anti-frizz products, as good as they are. get rid of frizzy hair for one occasion and once washed out, the frizz comes back, but treating your hair with this wonderful, luxuriant, natural product will have long term effects. We don’t want to get rid of frizzy hair for a day, we want to get rid of frizzy hair all together! This works on my hair. I used to think having mixed race hair was double the trouble, now I know it’s like having the best of both worlds.
